Travel Journal: When in New Orleans...

Saturday, January 8, 2011

Cool finds and greats eats in NOLA.  I will certainly be back. I had never realized that trendy and down home could actually be friends.  I experienced this collaboration between the two while on my birthday trip to the great state of Louisiana. Here are a few of my finds.

First stop, Mahony's Po-Boy Shop.  Excellent,  and off the beaten path on Magazine Street.
Recommendation: the "Peacemaker" Po-boy and the fried green tomatoes.

This little gem is a must see and do.  Sucre is a light, airy, and amazingly adorable "sweets boutique".  You will find tiny french macaroons in a variety of flavors, gourmet chocolates, cakes, and even gelato.
cool tidbit: They are open until midnight on weekends, if you are craving a midnight snack!

Sucre offers a variety of cute gifts that can be shipped anywhere in the United States.  I sent them to my mom for her birthday, they were a big hit.

My last stop on Magazine Street. You would never guess from it's humble storefront the cool factor it's insides have. A full service makeup boutique with all of your beauty needs.  I had my eyebrows waxed by a friendly girl named Brittany who was also a makeup artist. They looked great, BTW.
Cool Tidbit: While walking out from the waxing room I saw Jennifer Coolidge (AKA STIFFLER'S MOM)getting her makeup touched up. True Story. It took all I had not to do the bend and snap.

More to follow...

Next stop, Meauxbar.  This sweet, casual, yet refined bistro is an off the radar pot of gold.  A chef driven menu, cool crowd, tiny bar, and good food is exactly what you get here.  We couldn't get reservations at Cochon but I was certainly not disappointed to have been redirected to this quaint little joint.
Recommendation: Appetizer: Mac and Cheese" Salad: Oyster Salad Pastis.  Entree:  Civet of Rabbit Fricassee.  Dessert: See Below

Yummm!! Banana and pumpkin crepe stuffed with caramelized bananas, drizzled with caramel sauce and praline crumbles.

Craving Oysters? If the line is too long at Acme Oyster House, head right next door to Bourbon House for  great oysters and seafood.

I stumbled upon this lovely gelateria while strolling along a lonely little side street of the city. It's name La Divina. It turns out it has been given tons of press and accolades for best gelato, and with good reason.  The best part about it was the tiny "bambino" size serving you can order. Sometimes a little is just enough!

Last but certainly not least.  Cafe Du Monde.
Hot beignets, snowed with powdered sugar, and Chicory coffee. Need I say more?

Places to try on my next trip...or you can on yours!
